Las Vegas: Fremont Street

Hotel Nevada was the first (1906) casino-hotel along Fremont. The first neon sign appeared in 1934. Today along Fremont Street in downtown Las Vegas, pedestrian-oriented casinos cater to lower income groups; most tourists and conventioneers stay along The Strip. Notice the few casinos here and most are rarely featured on TV and in magazine articles that deal with Las Vegas and gambling.
How do you know that this is downtown? -- see the topographic map above. What land uses identify this area as the CBD? Hint: yellow marked buildings.
In 1995, this street was completely redone to outdo The Strip! Look at how the Golden Goose and Glitter Glush, a striptease bar, has been "covered-up"! As its promoters say, "Crossing the downtown skyline like a silvery caterpillar five stories up, the lighted canopy along Fremont Street is a new attraction to the downtown Las Vegas. This $70 million project includes a light and sound show at night, utilizing 2.1 million lights and 40,000 watts of sound; 1,500 feet long and nearly 100 feet high. Fremont Street has been transformed into a "people place" offering a unique blend of festival entertainment, patio cafes, shopping, and of course famous casinos." The former open-air downtown Fremont casino strip is now essentially one huge covered casino!
