When I was on the Third Mesa in early March, it had rained
and snowed for several days and the dirt trails were muddy and dangerous
to drive on without four-wheel drive. Two cemeteries are shown on the
Hotevilla topographic map, but the photos here come from another Hopi
cemetery near Walpi.
1) The cemeteries are very modest and with
scattered graves.
2) Like Indian cemeteries
elsewhere in the United States, wooden
crosses predominate.
3) Stones are commonly
placed around each grave.
4) Stones are frequently placed on the
graves with Roman Catholic icons. These stones
probably hold down the dirt in this very dry
and windy place.
