Indians and Fur Trading

European explorers, traders, and later settlers Europeanized North America--remade it in the image of Europe.
This Thomas Hart Benton mural in the Missouri state capitol in Jefferson City, captures the essence of this process:
fur trading between the white and Indian populations with approaching settlers in the background.
What is being traded?

Missionaries were also busy converting the Indians of the Great Lakes region.

Answer: fur belts are being traded for alcohol and guns--notice the position of each person

After the fur trade, Europeans came to settle the land, removing the now "useless" Indians and signing treaties with them.
