New Orleans: Garden District |
|
In the 19th century "Americans" settled in large numbers in New Orleans. The wealthy built their mansions along the major avenues, as in this photo. Whites of more modest incomes lived off these main, fashionable streets. In the inner most areas of these super blocks lived/live the black servant classes in simple shotgun houses, which are of African origin. |
