Amana Colonies:
Houses
Where are the houses located in High Amana?
The Amana houses have
traditionally consisted of two parts: a two-story part and a one-story
wing.
What was the
wing used for and what evidence can you
cite?

Answers:
- based on the topographic map, the houses (black squares and rectangles)
are clustered together in the center of the village
- the "wings" -- as shown
by the house on the left -- were used for kitchens: several families would
eat together (30-40 people) in each of several such communal kitchens in
each
village
- the the narrow chimney on the wing indicates cooking, which would keep
smells and fire hazards away from the living part of the houses. the chimneys on
the main parts of the houses were used for heating
