Anglos and Latinos in Tucson

Tucson illustrates the contrast between Anglos and Latinos, between affluent and poor, so typical of the Southwest in general.

Anglos and the more affluent population live on the northside of Tucson. The wealthiest live in the foothills, shown by the larger irregular block groups on U.S. census maps.

Southwest style of architecture predominates in Tucson, in both simple, cheaper and complex, expensive forms. Although these houses look substantial, they are only covered with a thin layer of stucco over chicken wire.

In contrast, the Latino, essentially Mexican, population, live in plain, modest, stuccoed house styles on the southside. Characteristics of predominately Latino neighborhoods are wire-fences in the front yard. If Anglo areas have wire-fences, they are only found in the back and side of houses.

Sometimes, metal fences and walls are combined to create enclosed lots, reminiscent of enclosed Spanish missions.   Murals are typical of all Latino communities, whether in the Southwest or Midwest.
