Second,
examine the 1990 census data for these seven tracts; matching
the LETTERS with the tract NUMBERS.
Census terms have specific meanings: check-them
out (scroll down to find the specific term).
Look
at the data by census tract by clicking on each of the characteristics in the
table:
| household type & relations | type of household, based on the principle person who completed the Census questionnaire | Click on each
tract to look at
photos.
|
| household income | median (half the population has more and the other half has less) household income | |
| occupations | type of occupation grouped into five major categories held by persons 16 years or older | |
| persons of Spanish origin could be any race; hence, it is presented separately from the major racial categories | ||
| year

years occupants have lived in their current housing and whether they were owners or renters | |
| age-sex pyramids | distribution of age groups for
the total population [By comparison, look at the age-sex diagrams for Canada and ones in Eau Claire.] |
|
Third, to match the characteristics with the
neighborhoods, draw some maps using the internet
USA
census mapping program (scroll down this page to enter the name of the city
that you want to map).
Note that not all the graphed variables that you have examined so
far are
available
for mapping (see table below). If this internet site is busy or very slow
or you are totally confused,
consult the maps of locational and political features
and of the following variables:
| Make notes, if necessary. |
Fourth, examine the topographic map of
Wichita and a close-up of each of the seven tracts:
| city-wide map Tract 1 | Tract 14 | Tract 41 | Tract 65 | Tract 74 | Tract 86 |
To look at the complete topographic map for Wichita, go to Topozone, select Get a Map, type in Wichita, then scroll to where you want to look in the city, and select 1:25,000 in the top menu bar -- the most detailed scale. Here are a few close-up examples for Tract 14, Tract 41, and Tract 65. These Wichita maps were originally made in 1961; and revised using air photos in 1982 (purple coloring indicates the latest additions).
select the most appropriate census characteristics, indicated by a LETTER, in the boxes below, by clicking on the down arrow and scrolling down to find the letter you want. Understand why YOU selected the letters!
