Age-Sex Pyramids Over Time and Place

Compare the age-sex pyramids for developed or industrial countries (inner darker red and grey colors) and developing or Third World countries (outer lighter red and grey colors) in 1950, 1990, and for 2025.

The male side is colored red and
the female side is colored grey.

Darker shadings of red and grey represent developed countries,
which are located within developing countries, which are shown
by lighter shadings of red and grey.

How were the developed and the developing countries
different in 1950?

What happened by 1990?

What might happen by 2025?

Answers:
1950: developing (Third World) countries had a much larger younger population than developed (industrial)  countries.
1990: a dramatic increase in the percent of children in the developing countries; and an increase in older people in the developing countries.
2025: the projected increase in the percent of children in the developing countries is even greater; and a very large increase in older people, especially women, in the developing countries.
