The Sahel region separates the Sahara Desert in the north from the rainforests of the coastal areas. Look at a video about the Sahel.

Optional:
1) For a contemporary look at the many forms of slavery, go to this web site and type the country in the Search Box you are interested in.
2) View the video, Out of Africa -- which deals with European colonial rule in East Africa; the relationship of a Danish women coffee grower to environmental conditions and to her European landowners and to her African workers; great scenery with a big moral story.
3) Read the book, To Timbuktu: A Journey Down the Niger (New York: Quill William Morrow, 1998), by Mark Jenkins -- which describes travel "on the cheap" in North and West Africa by foot, buses, motorbike, and boats.
4) Take a beer truck ride from Douala, Cameroon's capital, to the interior town of Bertoua -- a 20-hour ride that took 4 days!
5) What is life like living in the deserts of North Africa? Read about the nomads and semi-nomads of northern Sudan.
6) Will the world run out of water? Read.
