Corn is commonly grown for cattle feed throughout Portugal.
Traditional corn cribs are still seen on smaller farms and particularly in
poor, remote mountainous areas. The structure is made out of granite and the
slotted-side walls are made of wood, steel, and granite. Particularly
spectacular scenes of corn cribs are found in the villages of
Soajo and Lindoso
in the Minho region, where each farm
family stores its corn clustered together on the highest elevation for the
best ventilation. Rats and other rodents are kept out with the large
circular dishes. Take a video look at the
Soajo
corn cribs. |
