Portugal: Aveiro
Aveiro was once a seaport. Its salt pans were well known already by 959 A.D. By the 16th century it was a considerable town, rich from salt and the cod trade from Newfoundland. In 1575 a storm silted up the river. Tiles at the railroad station depict the central canal, salt pans and production, seaweed collection, fishing, and viticulture.
