Indian 45%; mestizo (mixed Indian and European ancestry) 37%; white 15%; Chinese, Japanese, African, and other (in order of size) 3%. The Chinese own and operate many restaurants in Lima; the Japanese are mainly professionals.

Cusco and the Urubamba River Valley
Cusco, the former Inca capital, is still the center of Indian culture in Peru and many famous Inca ruins are located in the Urubamba River valley, e.g., Pisac, Sacsayhuaman, and Machu Picchu.

Iquitos and the Amazon River
Iquitos is the only city accessible by ships or airplanes; the Amazon basin represents 65 percent of Peru's land area but only 10 percent of its population.
