Narrowboats (boats are 6 ft, 6 in wide and the locks are 7 ft wide!) are used on the 3,000 plus miles of canals in the United Kingdom. In the last 20 years the number of narrowboats has dropped by a third. The number of holidays taken by Britains in the UK fell by 12 percent over the last decade. This canal trip follows part of the Worcester and Birmingham Canal, starting in Dunhampstead and ending in Birmingham. Horses initially pulled the narrowboats, then coal fire engines were used, and today vacationers use diesel engines. Pubs and inns are scattered along the canals and serve wonderful food these days. A "carvey" serves usually three kinds of carved meat: turkey, roast beef and pork. Look at a short video of Llangollen canal as it crosses a river in Wales. Click on a picture to see a larger view.
