Mahatma Gandhi's memorial in Delhi, the capital
of India. He is leading the way. |
 |
Lotus Temple of the Bahai (1986) is a major
tourist attraction, regardless of religion, because it stands for
equality and oneness of all people.
|
 |
|
After Gandhi was assassinated on 30 January 1948, he was
cremated on the banks of the Yamuna at the Raj Ghat, which was converted
into a national memorial. A footpath made of stone flanked by
well-maintained lawns leads to a walled enclosure with a simple stone
platform in black marble were he was cremated. An eternal flame and
fresh flowers mark the site.
|
Indian
and foreign tourists visit the Gandhi memorials, the Lotus Temple, and
other national sites in Delhi. This man is from far East India,
near the Burmese border -- notice how his western jacket has been
decorated with traditional shell designs. |

|
Periodically, individuals, companies, and governments,
as in this case from Canada, show their respect by placing a
flower wreath on the cremation site.

Delhi reflects the richness of India in its
many expensive shops of Indian products from around the country. Here is
an example of embroidery with semi-precious stones and gold
threads from Rajasthan! |
