Czech
Republic: Mountains: Within
the Krkonose National Park lies the mountain peak of
Snezka (1,602 meters) which sits right
on the Polish-Czech border. The park is located in the Giant
Mountains, or Riesengebirge (in German) which is
part of the larger Sudeten Range. As the chair lifts rises in elevation the forest
cover becomes more and more "arctic" -- trees get shorter and
are severely damaged by snowfall and avalanches, and gradually give way
to moss and lichen and bare rocks above the tree line.
The international marker has CS carved into the stone, which identified
the country of Czechoslovakia. In 1993 it became the smaller Czech
Republic, shown here with a black C. On the backside,
Poland is represented with a P.
