UW-Eau Claire Department of Geography and Anthropology Scholarships Henry W. Kolka ScholarshipScholarship information: The name of the fund was recently changed from Geography Emeritus Professors' Scholarship and returned to the original name after Professor Henry W. Kolka. Eligibility criteria: Geography students with good scholastic records and who are outstanding individuals are eligible for this award. Scholarship award: $100 Deadline: November 30 Click here to download the application (.pdf) Kerlin and Ethel Seitz Scholarship Scholarship information: The Kerlin and Ethel Seitz Scholarship is designed to benefit a serious-minded Geography major at the UW-Eau Claire. Eligibility criteria: Preference will be given to Geography majors with emphases on land management, conservation of resources, and environmental problems. The student recipient(s) will have completed all of the 100- and 200- level core courses required by the department plus Geography 270 (or similar courses if future changes are made) before receiving the scholarship. The grades for the above-mentioned courses will be used to compute the scholarship's GPA requirements. The student may be either a junior or senior if the other requirements have been satisfied. If a student receives the award during their junior year, he/she may compete for scholarship renewal. Scholastic Achievement: Minimum grade point requirements are: 3.0 average (on 4.0 scale) for all completed college courses; 3.3 average (on 4.0 scale) for all completed Geography courses. The student must exhibit to the selection committee a high potential for success and contribution to his or her chosen profession in the area of community service and/or research. The student should have well-defined goals and realistic plans for reaching those goals. To summarize this requirement in a simplistic manner, "He or she must be a winner." Scholarship award: $2,000 (three awarded each year) Deadline: November 30 Click here to download the application (.pdf) Jana Minnick Field Study Scholarship Scholarship information: Designated for students enrolled in Geography 401: Capstone Seminar or equivalent course. Eligibility criteria: Must be Geography major in a junior or senior standing and must show academic accomplishment and financial need. Must use money for travel expenses associated with GEOG 401 or equivalent. The amount of the award will be based upon donations and earnings in the scholarship fund. Scholarship award: $600 (scholarship may be smaller if divided among equally-worthy applicants) Deadline: third Friday of the semester during which the student is enrolled in GEOG 401 or equivalent course Click here to download the application (.pdf) Craig Wickman Applied GIS Scholarship Scholarship information: This scholarship is available through the generosity of Craig Wickman, a native of Eau Claire and alumnus of UW-Eau Claire, where he earned a BS in Geography in 1994. His area of interest in geography is GIS, and he is currently a GIS programmer with American Electric Power in Columbus, OH Eligibility criteria: This scholarship has been created to support a sophomore or higher who has a declared major or minor in geography with special interest in Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The student must show applied use of GIS in their academic work, and show great potential for success in a career in GIS. Academic success and potential in GIS should be the highest criteria for selection. Financial need should not be a consideration. In addition to the letter of application, students applying for the scholarship must also include a reference from a faculty member who can speak to the applicant’s interest in and potential for success in a career in GIS. Scholarship award: $500 Deadline: November 30 Click here to download the application (.pdf) NovoPrint Excellence in Cartography Scholarship Scholarship information: Each semester, this fund will provide several awards to students for excellence in mapmaking skills as evaluated through a competition in the designated cartography class. One student each semester will receive the top scholarship award for outstanding mapmaking skills. In addition, up to 10 students per year will each receive an internship award to complete a specific map project in cooperation with the department and NovoPrint. Recipients should address thank you letters to Joe Steucken at NovoPrint and send them to the UW-Eau Claire Foundation.
