Domer scholarships to benefit first-generation college students at UW-Eau Claire, CVTC

First-generation college students attending UW-Eau Claire and Chippewa Valley Technical College will benefit from scholarships established at both institutions thanks to the generosity of the Arnold and Lois Domer Foundation.

The Arnold and Lois Domer Foundation has established $1,000 annual scholarships at UW-Eau Claire and CVTC in memory of Arnold and in honor of Lois, both longtime Eau Claire residents and former owners of Arnie's Ski & Garden Center. Arnold Domer died in November 2003.

"Arnie, who attended UW-Eau Claire in the 1930s, and his wife, Lois, were committed to the goal of helping young people reach their aspirations," said Mickey Crothers, associate professor of psychology at UW-Eau Claire and trustee of the Arnold and Lois Domer Foundation. "The Arnold and Lois Domer Scholarships will honor and celebrate the lives of Arnie and Lois through the support of young persons who demonstrate the attributes they so deeply valued."

Arnold Domer also was an adjunct math instructor at Chippewa Valley Technical College in the 1980s.

"As a successful businessman, he shared his business acumen with students, particularly as it related to customer service and business management," said Diane Pavelski, executive vice president of the CVTC Foundation. "We are grateful to have this scholarship opportunity for our CVTC students."

The scholarships reflect the fact that Arnold considered himself a self-made man who believed in giving back to the community, said Crothers.

"He surmounted humble beginnings and many obstacles to achieve success," said Crothers. "He believed in loyalty, honesty and hard work, and his life was a living example of all three."

The scholarships will be awarded to continuing students at UW-Eau Claire and CVTC whose performance exemplifies excellence. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 2.75. Preference will be given to students who are the first generation in their family to attend a university and who demonstrate financial need, according to the scholarship criteria.

The Domer gift to UW-Eau Claire is recognized as a contribution to Fulfilling the Promise of Excellence, the UW-Eau Claire Foundation's comprehensive campaign to benefit UW-Eau Claire's people and programs.
