Jessica Sertling Miller, a native of Strasbourg, France, joined the Department in 2006. She has a diverse background in language studies, with a Master's in English Linguistics (Université Marc-Bloch, 2001), a Master's in French Literature (St. Louis University, 2001), and a Ph.D. in French Linguistics (University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2007). Her doctoral work focused on Swiss French intonation. Her current research involves classroom investigations on pronunciation and oral proficiency pedagogy. She recently co-authored a textbook on French pronunciation titled "Sons et Sens: la prononciation du français en contexte" (Georgetown University Press, 2013). In addition, she enjoys teaching French at all levels, but is particularly interested in teaching about the many varieties of French spoken in the world. In 2012 she initiated a Domestic Intercultural Immersion experience in collaboration with the Department of Geography and Anthropology, taking students to Cajun Louisiana to investigate the relationship between the culture and geography of the area.
