Manuel Fernández received his Ph.D. in Spanish in 2001 from Pennsylvania State University and is currently an Associate Professor of Spanish at the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire.  He has published and presented on the work of Leonardo Padura Fuentes, Luisa Valenzuela and others. His most current research is on the music of the Cuban hip hop group Los Aldeanos and on music produced outside of Cuba by the island's diaspora. His future research will continue to analyze the working out of the Cuban national trauma as represented in literature, film, music and other cultural productions of Cuba and its diaspora. While that constitutes the bulk of his current research, he has taught all levels of Spanish and has also been involved in a course on the mathematics of indigenous people of the Americas, which includes discussion of the Nazca lines, quipus, yupanas and calendars from Mesoamérica
