Tom Carlson is a native of Saint Paul, MN, but he comes to us via Stuttgart, Germany where he lived, studied and worked for more than 25 years before joining the UWEC in the fall of 2012. After his BA in German and Linguistics from Augsburg College in Minneapolis, Tom was granted a Fulbright to study comparative Germanic generative linguistics under Hubert Haider in Stuttgart, which he later left in favor of applied linguistics. Tom got his MA-TESL from the University of Minnesota under Elaine Tarone and Andrew Cohen in 1998, investigating the effects of word meaning on foreign accent persistence. Thereafter, Tom was the Director of Studies for a private language and cultural training institute in Stuttgart specialized in business English training for in-service adults.
