Dr. Chaves earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish and Social Studies from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in 1983. In 1987, he passed the State of Wisconsin Fire Safety and Evaluation Training. In 1992, he attended the University of Minnesota to complete the coursework towards his PhD. In 1999, Dr. Chaves graduated with a PhD in Philosophy in the field of Hispanic and Luso Brazilian Literature and Linguistics.

He taught high school Spanish from 1983-1992 in the Wisconsin area. In 1996, he taught Spanish for Gifted and Talented Students for Fast-Paced Spanish in middle school. From 1992-1997, he was the Teaching Assistant for Spanish language, literature and Business Spanish at the University of Minnesota. Then in 1995, he came to the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire where he is currently the Assistant Professor for Spanish language and Business Spanish, along with lecturing for Spanish language and Literature.

For conferences, Dr. Chaves has presented many research topics such as: Cultural Discourses of Afrocuban Identity; Argentina: Rol Literario de Iconos Culturales en la Literatura del Nuevo Milenio; Latin American Poetry: Great Poets – Great Themes; Folklore Revives Argentina Cultural Identity and Panelist for Latin America: Bridge to the 21st Century; and more.

Some of his honors and achievements include: International Teaching Instructor in Cuernavaca, Mexico in summer 2002; Regional Faculty Associate of the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee on September 10, 2001; member of The Tango Times and Tango Reporter, Journalism devoted to the Tango In Literature from 2000 to present; Interpreter English/Spanish, Llewellyn Publications, St. Paul, MN; President of Wisconsin Chapter of American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP) in 2000; and many others.
