Irene Lazda has taught courses in language, literature, film and culture at UW-Eau Claire since 1969. Dr. Lazda has her MA and PhD from the University of Pittsburgh, where she wrote on the influence of Chinese philosophy and theater on the thought and work of Bertolt Brecht. Spring semester 2004 and 2008 she was on-site director of the study abroad program in Wittenberg, Germany. She has co-directed the Travel Seminar in Central Europe since 2002. Most recently her research has focused on the defining of national identity through museums and memorials. She is a board member of the Museum of the Occupation of Latvia. Dr. Lazda is advisor to the local chapter  (Kappa Delta) of the German Honor Society (Delta Phi Alpha).
