Majors

The English Department has majors in five emphases.  Advising guides for each emphasis can be obtained by clicking on the name of the emphasis.

Creative Writing
Linguistics
Literature
Science and Technical Writing
Teaching/English Education

All of our majors follow a parallel program that consists of core courses, literature courses, and emphasis courses. 

Core courses:

• Engl 210 Introduction to Texts
• Engl 221 The English Language
• Engl 285 Introduction to Theory and Criticism

A twelve-credit literature requirement:
(courses may be specified within a particular emphasis)

• no more than six credits at the 200 level
• no fewer than six credits at the 400 level

Twelve to fifteen credits of courses in the emphasis requirement
