The Department of Sociology and the Department of Communication and Journalism at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire invite applications for a probationary tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor with a joint appointment in Sociology and Communication/Journalism. The position will start August 20, 2012.
Responsibilities
- Applicants will be expected to teach a total of three to four courses each semester (depending on class size) in the Department of Sociology and the Department of Communication and Journalism.
- The successful candidate will also be expected to participate in research and scholarly activities, provide academic advising to students as assigned, engage in service to the university and community, and participate in department/program, college, and university committee work.
- Teaching introductory and upper level coursework will be required.
Qualifications
- Doctorate (or terminal degree) in Sociology, Mass Communication, Communication, Journalism or related field from a regionally accredited higher education institution is required.
- ABD applicants must complete the terminal degree by May 21, 2013.
- The successful applicant will have expertise in one or more of the following areas:

- Communication and social inequality
- Culture/popular culture
- Media criticism/literacy
- Social movements
- Theory
- Visual communication.
- Preference will be given to candidates with a demonstrated background in Sociology and Communication, Mass Communication or Journalism.
- Demonstrated ability to teach courses in both areas will be considered an asset.
- Salary will be commensurate with college teaching experience
The Department/Program:
The Department of Sociology has eight full time faculty members and offers a major and minor in sociology. The Department also has administrative responsibility for an interdisciplinary family studies minor. There are approximately 220 sociology majors and minors and 100 family studies minors. The Department enrolls approximately 1250 students in Departmental courses per semester. Faculty are committed to the goals of a liberal arts education and to assisting students in applying the "sociological imagination" in order to define, understand, and critically analyze the social world. The 18 full time faculty members in the Department of Communication and Journalism serve approximately 500 majors and minors in communication, journalism and mass communication. The mass communication and journalism programs are accredited by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. Faculty emphasize the development, integration and practical application of theories, knowledge, and skills, and are committed to the principle that communication and journalism are crucial to a democratic society.
