A probationary tenure-track faculty position is available in the Department of Mathematics at the rank of Assistant Professor with an emphasis in Mathematics Education. The position is available beginning August 22, 2011. Under exceptional circumstances, an appointment could be at the rank of Associate Professor. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
The Department of Mathematics has 40 staff members and offers undergraduate programs in mathematics and mathematics education, as well as graduate courses for teachers. Currently there are approximately 200 students pursuing mathematics majors and 100 pursuing minors. The Department sponsors a summer REU program funded by the National Science Foundation.
Responsibilities
- The primary responsibilities of the position are to teach undergraduate courses for prospective teachers of elementary, middle and high school mathematics and other undergraduate mathematics courses as assigned in the Department of Mathematics, participate in research and other scholarly activities, and provide academic advising to students as assigned.
- Other responsibilities include service to the Department, the University, the community and the profession.
- The typical teaching load is twelve credits per semester with two preparations.
Qualifications
- A doctorate in mathematics education or mathematics with a strong emphasis in mathematics education is required by August 22, 2011.
- For an exceptional candidate who is ABD, an appointment at the rank of instructor may be considered.
- Appointment to the third year will require a completed doctorate.
- Preference will be given to those who can successfully promote and model the teaching necessary for implementation of the NCTM Principles and Standards.
- Experience in teaching K-12 mathematics or preservice teachers is desirable.
- Applicants must have a commitment to undergraduate teaching at all levels and present evidence of teaching excellence.
- The successful applicant will also present evidence of the potential to establish a productive research program that can involve collaboration with undergraduate students or with K-12 teachers in professional development.
- The Department is especially interested in applicants who bring diverse perspectives to the University and those who may be especially effective in mentoring and advising students who are members of groups that have been historically underrepresented in the discipline.
