History: Assistant Professor of Public History

A probationary, tenure-track faculty position is available in the Department of History at the rank of Assistant Professor with an emphasis in Public History beginning August 20, 2012.  

Responsibilities
 

  • Applicants will be expected to help expand an established public history program with existing expertise in archives and historic preservation.
  • Applicants will teach courses as assigned in the Department of History.
  • Other faculty duties include participating in research and scholarly/creative activities, providing academic advising to students as assigned, engaging in service to the university and community, and participating in department, college, and university committee work.  

 

Qualifications
 

  • Doctorate or ABD in History or related field from a regionally accredited higher education institution is required.  ABD applicants must complete the terminal degree by March 20, 2013. 
  • Salary will be commensurate with teaching experience.
  • Area of Specialty:  Public History. Specialization outside of archives or historic preservation preferred.  
  • Area of Concentration: Departmental needs include, but are not limited to, early America to 1815.  
  • Preference will be given to candidates with experience as practicing public historians.  
  • Demonstrated ability to teach public history courses and supervise public history internships will be considered an asset.
  • The ability to bring diverse perspectives to the campus may be considered an asset. 

 

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT
The Department of History at UW-Eau Claire was the recipient of the University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents Teaching Excellence Award in 2006. It has 12 tenured or tenure track faculty members who are committed to a curriculum that engages students in independent research and exposes them to global and American ethnic diversity. UW-Eau Claire has the largest history department in the University of Wisconsin System outside of Madison and Milwaukee, with more than 250 undergraduate majors and minors and 44 MA students.  

The growing Public History program at UW-Eau Claire enrolls 40 undergraduate and graduate students. The Department of History at UW-Eau Claire is home to the Northern Field Services Office of the Wisconsin Historical Society (WHS). It partners with the WHS and the Chippewa Valley Museum to place interns throughout the state.  

The Department of History has been the recipient of more than $4,000,000. in grants from the U.S. Department of Education, the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Wisconsin Humanities Council for K-12 teacher education and public programs.
