The University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire seeks to hire two probationary, tenure-track faculty positions in writing in the English department, or other appropriate department, at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning August 20, 2012. These positions are funded through the Blugold Commitment, a student-initiated tuition increase designed to enhance the distinctive, high-quality UW-Eau Claire experience.
Position 1: Assistant Professor of Writing
Responsibilities
- The successful candidate will teach in the first-year writing program, the Blugold Seminar in Critical Reading and Writing (http://www.uwec.edu/blugoldseminar/index.htm ), and assist the Director of Composition with program development.
- The successful candidate will also teach other courses as appropriate for his/her areas of expertise, including but not limited to advanced writing and graduate courses in the Masters in Writing program.
- The typical semester load is three courses, equivalent to 11-12 credits.
- All department members participate in research and scholarly activities, provide academic advising to students, and engage in service in the department, college, and university.
Qualifications
- Earned doctorate in Rhetoric and Composition or related field.
- Candidates who are ABD will be considered, but all requirements for the doctoral degree must be completed by August 20, 2012.
- The successful candidate will demonstrate a record of excellence in teaching writing at the college level, in addition to evidence of strong scholarship or scholarly potential.
- The successful candidate will also have experience in at least one of the following areas: basic writing or digital media/21st century literacies and rhetorics.
- Other strong assets include evidence of:

- Additional areas of scholarly or teaching interests in cultural rhetorics (including race, ethnicity, gender, and/or LGBTQ);
- Demonstrated commitment to teaching first-year writing;
- Experience with WAC and/or WID;
- Experience with writing program assessment;
- Experience with ESL/ELL;
- Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusiveness.
Position 2: Assistant Professor to serve as Center for Writing Excellence Director
Responsibilities
- The successful candidate will direct the University's new Center for Writing Excellence, providing vision and leadership for its services to students, outreach to faculty, and coordination with the first-year writing program.
- Essential duties include supervising and working with professional staff; training and mentoring undergraduate tutors and graduate assistants; planning and implementing enriched student programming; growing the Writing Fellows program and other recent initiatives; working with the Composition Director to provide WAC/WID support for the campus; and undertaking short- and long-term center/program assessment.
- The successful candidate will receive a 50% administrative appointment for these duties, in addition to teaching 5-6 credits each semester.
- All department members participate in research and scholarly activities, and engage in service to the department, college and university.

- Experience with WAC, WID, or related campus-wide writing initiatives;
- Experience with writing center or writing program assessment;
- Additional areas of scholarly interest or research including basic writing, digital media, or cultural rhetorics (including race, ethnicity, gender, and/or LGBTQ);
- Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusiveness.
