Communication and Journalism: Assistant Professor with Communication emphasis

The Department of Communication and Journalism at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire invites applications for a probationary tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor with an emphasis in Communication. The position will start August 20, 2012. 

Responsibilities
 

  • Applicants will be expected to provide innovative leadership for the department's basic communication course, including the integration of communication in the liberal education program and across the curriculum, the incorporation of high impact practices, and assessment of the basic course.
  • Applicants will teach the basic communication course as well as courses in their area of interest in communication. 
  • Applicants will be expected to participate in research and scholarly activities, provide academic advising to students as assigned, engage in service to the university and community, and participate in department, college, and university committee work.

 

Qualifications
 

  • Doctorate in Communication or related field from a regionally accredited higher education institution is required.  ABD applicants must complete the terminal degree by March 20, 2013. 
  • Ability to provide leadership for the department's basic communication course, experience teaching a basic public speaking or hybrid introductory communication course, and ability to teach additional courses in communication are required.
  • Also required are strong communication skills and potential for excellent teaching and high quality research in the discipline.
  • Salary will be commensurate with teaching experience. 
  • Additional assets include:
    • experience administering a basic communication program;
    • experience/interest in communication across the curriculum, integrated learning and high impact practices;
    • research and/or teaching interests in communication and diversity; and
    • the ability to enhance the diversity of the department and serve as a role model and mentor for women and/or minorities.   


The Department:

The Department of Communication and Journalism serves approximately 500 undergraduate majors and minors in journalism, communication studies, organizational communication, public relations and advertising.  The department currently offers between 18-22 stand-alone sections of the basic public speaking course each semester. Department faculty members emphasize the development, integration, and practical application of theories, knowledge, and skills, and are committed to the principle that communication and journalism are crucial to a democratic society.
