Home of the Flying Pig...

The Department of Economics has a mascot. Some people have asked why a flying pig was chosen. It comes from the expression of disbelief "When Pigs Fly!" There are two views of the significance of the flying pig. One is that good economists should have a healthy skepticism. The flying pig symbolizes this inquisitive attitude. For instance, you might use this phrase when someone says, "A new administrative position will reduce paperwork." The other view is that the department achieves and teaches students to achieve very difficult objectives. In this view, the metaphorical flying pig represents the achievement of improbable goals.

The name of the mascot is Odyssey. Odyssey, "an intellectual quest", makes it particularly suitable as the name for an academic mascot.

Whatever the meaning or name of the flying pig, it certainly makes a fine graphic.
