Since Hmong Americans have entered the United States comparatively recently, their year of entry might influence their level of integration into the new society. Census data show that California's Hmong population arrived in the United States a little earlier, on average, than those of Minnesota and Wisconsin, although the difference was not very large.
The 1990 Census provides data on year of entry in ten intervals including two- or three-year intervals in the 1980s, five-year intervals in the 1960s and 1970s, a single interval for the 1950s, and an open interval for years before 1950. The average year of entry for Hmong Americans was calculated using the following formula:
An example of how an earlier year of entry influences the overall level of integration into the society is demonstrated in the case of Orange County in California. Orange County's Hmong population arrived on average in 1980, which was the earliest average arrival date for the Hmong. The income data in 1990 show that Orange County Hmong population had the highest household income level of all the counties of the three states.
