The Hmong-American immigration to the United States is fairly recent, with most immigrants arriving during the early to middle 1980s. By 1990 most of the Hmong population had settled in the Midwest and along the West Coast. According to the 1990 Census, the U.S. Hmong population totaled more than 90,000. Over half, 46,892, of the US Hmong population lived California. Minnesota had the second place with 16,833. Wisconsin came third with a population of 16,373, and Michigan had the next highest share of the Hmong population with 2,250. The remaining 7,700 Hmong residents were widely dispersed over other states. This study employs statewide data on the Hmong population in California, Minnesota, and Wisconsin plus county-level data for all counties with Hmong populations greater than 600 in 1990. The latter include eleven counties in California, mostly located in the agricultural Central Valley; the two counties in the heart of the Twin Cities metropolitan area in Minnesota; and ten counties in Wisconsin. Information on county populations is provided in the following table: Counties With Hmong Population Over
