The Hmong came from an agrarian society where a large
family was a common feature. In California the average number of people
per Hmong household was 7, compared with 6 in both Minnesota and Wisconsin.
For the general population the average number of persons per household
in California in 1990 was 3, and it was 2.5 in Minnesota and Wisconsin.
The 1990 Census indicates that about 90% of Hmong Americans
did not own their homes. Of those that did, most owned homes with only
2 to 3 bedrooms.

The following table shows the average number of people
per Hmong household as compared to the general population, as well as
the breakdown of adults (18 and over) and children (0-17) in a Hmong
households.
