Counseling Services Groups

Information:

Counseling Services staff are available to present on a wide variety of topics to classes, organizations, and residence halls. Please contact the center two weeks in advance to arrange a topical presentation.

In addition, counseling staff members are often willing to work with students on student research topics and class projects. Staff can be contacted by making an appointment at counseling services, calling us by phone, 836-5521, or by e-mailing the staff member you wish to contact through our Staff Profiles.

Each semester we offer a number of groups.

Fall 2009 Groups

1. *Asperger’s Support Group: Time and Dates to be determined
     This small group is designed to allow students to share their experiences with Asperger’s, build specific coping skills, and provide mutual support.  Please bring your schedule to the intake interview for the group so we can schedule a time that meets the needs of group members.  P.J. 2. *Assertiveness Training Group: Tuesday 4:00 - 5:00 p.m., October 27-December 1
     A six session group providing training in assertive social skills. Learn to express yourself and feel good about doing so, without hurting others in the process. Learn specific assertive skills such as making requests, saying no, giving and receiving criticism, and asking for behavior change. P.J. Kennedy, Ph.D., Group Facilitator.

3.  *Body Love:  Thursday 4:00 - 5:30, October 22 - December 3
     A group for women struggling to accept themselves and their bodies.  This six week group will look at ways women can develop a healthy self identity not related to how she looks, weighs or what she eats.  If you find yourself preoccupied with issues of weight, food and body dissatisfaction and want freedom from the bondage of a low self-body image and obsession over weight and food, then join us at “BodyLove”: A  Group for Women Searching  for Body Acceptance.  Adrienne Storm, Ph.D. and Jennifer Schofield, pre-master’s intern, Group Facilitators.

4.  *First Offenders Alcohol Education Groups: These are offered on an as needed basis and  facilitated by David Sommers, MS, LPC, CSAC. This program meets the requirements of the Eau Claire Courts “First Offender” Program.  Call or stop by  the Counseling  Services office for more information and when classes are scheduled to run.

5.  *GLBT Support Group: Date and time to be announced
     The GLBT Support Group is a small, confidential, and safe place to share success and difficulties.  We will explore relationships with ourselves and others, and look at educational material as it pertains to our group discussions.  Roberta Goodman, Ph.D., Group Facilitator.

6. Grief After Suicide Support Group: Time and Dates to be determined.
      This is a confidential and supportive group for those who are mourning the loss of a friend, acquaintance, loved one, and/or family member.  The focus is educational information along with personal sharing and healing.  After the intake with Counseling Services, schedules are to be submitted for choosing a group time.  Roberta Goodman, Ph.D., Group Facilitator.

7.  *Living Well: Tuesday, 1:00 – 3:30 p.m., October 6 – November 10
     Learn how to deal with fatigue, pain, frustration and other symptoms caused by a chronic health condition by enrolling in Living Well. Program provided to you by Counseling Services and the Aging and Disability Resource Center of Eau Claire County.  This class meets every Tuesday for 6 weeks. This free course is open to all faculty and staff through the Employee Assistance Program (EAP).  Registration required. Call 836-5521. 8.  ! 21st Century Communication!: Date and time to be announced
     Be part of an exciting and interactive student group focused on 21st Century communication!  This small student group will focus on a range of interactions dealing with peers, to faculty and staff through discussion and group exercises. Practice and implement communication skills in a highly supportive environment. Charles Vue, MSW and Roberta Goodman, Ph.D., Group Facilitators.
    
9.  *Veterans’ Families Support Group: Thursday 5:00 - 6:00 p.m.,  October 29 - December 10  (in the      Veterans’ Center, Schofield 020) 
     This is an unstructured support group for veterans’ family members and significant others. P.J. Kennedy, Ph.D. and Diane Stegner Roadt, MSW, Group Facilitators.

10. *Veteran’s Support Group: Thursday 4:00 - 5:00 p.m. October 29 - December 10, (in the Veterans’ Center, Schofield 020) 
This  is  an  unstructured  support  group for veterans.  We may invite speakers in to talk about topics of interest, as  the  group  wishes. P.J. Kennedy, Ph.D., USN Medical Corpsman, 1968-1971; Group Facilitator.

First Offenders Alcohol Education Program

These groups are offered on an as needed basis. This group is for UW-Eau Claire students who have received an underage drinking citation in Eau Claire or other counties and choose to participate in the group as part of their penalty. There is a fee which covers both the prescreening and for participation in the groups. Contact us by calling 836-5521 for details and fee amounts. A prescreening appointment by a professional staff member is required. Also, Students who have not received a citation but who would like to address their alcohol concerns in a group setting, and who have been prescreened by a staff member, may participate in the group. All groups are run by a professional staff member. Call 836-5521 or stop by the Counseling Services office to register for a class and for more information on when groups are offered. All students who have completed the program will receive a certificate of participation.

Self Help Library

Counseling Services has hundreds of books, pamphlets, audio, brochures and videotapes on popular self help topics. Most of our homemade mental health handouts are found outside of the center at our "store front" and are free. Books and tapes can be checked out at the reception desk for a two week period. Many of these materials can be found on our Self Help page.
