Senior Processing Fee
Graduation at UW-Eau Claire is one of the most important milestones in the life of our students. To assist students in preparing for graduation and to continue to offer a memorable commencement ceremony, a one-time senior processing fee of $25 will be implemented in January, 2013. The non-refundable fee will be assessed to all undergraduate students the semester they accumulate 90 credits or more. Transfer students who arrive at UW-Eau Claire with 90 credits will be charged the fee the semester after they first enroll.
What will the $25 senior processing fee be used for?
In the past, the university has underwritten the costs of commencement, which include extensive staff time to plan and organize events that involve literally thousands of students, parents, friends and guests. The processing fee will contribute to these rising costs. In addition, for the first time, UW-Eau Claire will also offer prospective graduates a Senior Countdown graduation fair. A one-day event to be held in spring 2013, the Countdown will provide Blugolds with all the information they need about graduation in one convenient place and time. An improved website will also keep students up to date on what they need to know as they approach graduation.
Is UW-Eau Claire the only university to have this fee?
UW-Eau Claire is one of the few universities in the UW System without a graduation fee. Fees for graduation currently range from $25 for Platteville graduates to $30 for La Crosse and Parkside to $40 at Milwaukee and River Falls and $50 for Stevens Point, Stout and Superior students. At the majority of these institutions the fee applies to all potential graduates and is not refundable.
What about a fee for graduate students?
The senior processing fee is being phased in as part of a three-year pilot program to assess how best to serve our students. Because undergraduates are the majority of our student body, it was decided to begin with seniors. As the undergraduate fee process is refined, it is anticipated that a fee for graduate students will be added. It is not in place at this time.
Why is the fee applied at 90 credits?
Because the fee provides services for students who are preparing to graduate, and because it is not refundable, it is assessed at the point at which most students are into their senior year and most likely to continue to graduation. Transfer students who enter UW-Eau Claire with 90 credits, will not have the fee assessed until the semester after they first enroll.
What if I do not intend to participate in commencement? Do I still need to pay the fee?
Yes, the senior processing fee supports not only commencement but also assists all senior students in better preparing for their graduation, through the Senior Countdown event and the information on the commencement website.
What if I do not pay the $25 fee?
Like any other university fee, registering for classes and receiving academic transcripts requires that your outstanding balance is paid.
