As a community of students and scholars, we are in the business of thoughtful engagement with the world around us. As a community of citizens—increasingly “global citizens”—we know that we all hold responsibility for the world around us, both cultural and ecological. So what does it mean to engage with the world thoughtfully? Surely it begins with understanding how “the world” works? Every discipline on campus has some business with that answer, and every human being on the planet, too.
The University’s Centennial Plan includes “Stewardship and Sustainability” among the university’s four values. “Stewardship,” the plan observes, “is the value that prompts us to safeguard the things that matter most” (6). Chancellor Levin-Stankevich, in signing the AAC&U's Presidents Climate Commitment, reinforced the commitment that was already growing on our campus. The fall 2008 issue of The View includes "The Greening of the Blue and Gold," which provides a great overview of many of these activities— from energy conservation to clean commuting, from curricular approaches to the pursuit of local food. The university community is busy on many fronts expanding sustainable practices and cultivating awareness about this vital topic.
On this web site we want to celebrate all the ways that the campus community is aiming for sustainability. We hope you'll be encouraged by what you read here, and that you'll contemplate ways you could engage with the energy!
