Federal Job Search Guide

USAJobs.gov is a free website that contains a majority of government jobs available in the U.S. and overseas. It is one of the few websites recommended for use as a government job search engine. Not only does USAJobs.gov contain job openings, it also contains information to help you obtain a government job. USAJobs.gov works along with Studentjobs.gov which offers internships for undergraduates.  *

HOW TO CREATE AN ACCOUNT ON USAJOBS.GOV
1) Go to www.USAJobs.gov
2) Click on the My USAJOBS button at the top
3) Click Create Account (It is free)
4) You can either begin to search jobs right away or create a resume

HOW TO FIND GOVERNMENT JOBS ON USAJOBS.GOV
1) Click on the Search Jobs button at the top

2) You can search by Browse Search (for students unsure of what they want to do or who they want to work for)

  • Type in a keyword on the “Keyword Search” box OR
  • Browse Careers by Agency, US Location and Occupation

3) You can search by Agency Search (for students who know what agency they want to work for)

  • Search for jobs only within a selected Federal Government Agency
    • Enter a Department/Agency Name OR
    • Select a Department, Independent Agency, Bureau or Organizational Sub-Component
    • Select locations under Location Search
    • Enter a 2 or 4 digit Series Number if you know one under Series Number Search
    • Select occupations under Occupational Series
    • Enter a Salary Range or Pay Grade
    • Select “No” or “Yes” for Applicant Eligibility
    • Select options available for Show Jobs Posted, Sort Results by and View Description
    • Click Search for Jobs

4) You can search by Series Search (for students who know the title of the job they want to apply for)

  • Search for federal occupations that are grouped into series and given a numerical code for identification
    • Enter a 2 or 4 digit Series Number if you know one under Series Number Search
    • Select occupations under Occupational Series
    • Select locations under Location Search
    • Enter a Salary Range or Pay Grade
    • Select “No” or “Yes” for Applicant Eligibility
    • Select options available for Show Jobs Posted, Sort Results by and View Description
    • Click Search for Jobs

5) You can search by Advanced Search

  • Enter a keyword under Keyword Search
  • Enter a job title under Title Search
  • Enter a 2 or 4 digit Series Number if you know one under Series Number Search
  • Select occupations under Occupational Series
  • Select locations under Location Search
  • Enter a Salary Range or Pay Grade
  • Select “No” or “Yes” for Applicant Eligibility
  • Select options available for Show Jobs Posted, Sort Results by and View Description
  • Click Search for Jobs

6) You can search by Senior Executive (for people with several years of work experience)

  • Search for top level Federal Government jobs after several years experience
    • Enter a keyword under Keyword Search
    • Select locations under Location Search
    • Select “No” or “Yes” for Applicant Eligibility
    • Select options available for Show Jobs Posted, Sort Results by and View Description
    • Click Search for Jobs

WHEN CLICKING ON A JOB TITLE
When clicking on “Overview”: *

  • The salary range for this occupation is displayed
  • The series and grade (series are a group of occupations that are similar and given a four-digit number and grade is the difficulty level of the job)
  • Promotion Potential: The chances of you getting promoted, usually based on your grade
  • Who may be considered: Lists the eligibility requirements
  • Open period: The day the job was opened and the day it will close
  • Position information: Tells you if the job is full time, part time, or an internship
  • Duty locations: Where the job is located or may be located if there are multiple agency locations
  • Job summary: Gives the tasks you will be expected to complete
  • Key requirements: Lists what you will have to do for the job such as having a background check

When clicking on “Duties”:

  • It will tell you the Additional Duty Location Info of the job
  • Major duties: Gives you a brief summary of what you will be expected to do

When clicking on “Qualifications & Evaluations”:

  • Qualifications required: Knowledge, skills, and abilities, minimum federal qualification requirements and additional information about specialized experience requirements
  • How you will be evaluated: Informs you how you will be evaluated

When clicking on “Benefits & Other Info”:

  • Benefits: Lists the different benefits you will receive with this occupation
  • Other information: Lets you know various information such as veteran eligibility, etc.

Click on “How to Apply”:

  • How to apply: Follow the “how to apply” precisely to ensure your application and resume will be received
