Graduate School Timetable

First Year

  • Talk to an advisor about academic and career goals
  • Make curricular decisions based upon academic plan

Second Year

  • Research areas of interest, institutions, programs and specializations
  • Research and seek opportunities to tutor, research, or intern
  • Meet with an advisor to update academic plan

Third Year

  • Continue to research areas of interest, institutions, programs and specializations
  • Talk to your advisor or professor about graduate programs of interest
  • Research, prepare and complete appropriate graduate admission tests
  • If appropriate, obtain letters of recommendation
  • Tutor, complete research, volunteer, or intern to gain transferable skills
  • Investigate national scholarships
  • Write for application materials and admissions essay
  • Visit institutions of interest, if possible
  • Check on application deadlines and rolling admission policies

Fourth Year

  • Obtain letters of recommendation
  • Send in completed applications
  • Register for Graduate and Professional School Financial Aid Service (GAPSFAS), if appropriate
  • Check with each institution before the deadline to make sure your file is complete
  • Send a deposit to the institution of choice and notify other institutions of decision
  • Send thank-you notes to people who wrote your recommendation letters
