Where are you working and what do you do there?
I’m a staff accountant at Baker Tilly Virchow Krause, LLP in Madison, Wisconsin. I specialize in Energy and Utilities, specifically in assurance services.
What is your typical work day like?
My typical workday involves working on client projects either at the office or in the field. During busy season, I am at clients offices on a daily basis working on financial audits. Client locations range from California to Texas and everywhere in-between including small towns and villages in Wisconsin.
What path did you take to your current career, were there other jobs along the way?
My current career started off with filling out tons of job applications through UWEC’s Career Services. I applied for anything and everything related to accounting or finance. From there came many interviews with different firm and companies both public and private. It followed with job offers from three different companies. I finally chose Baker Tilly as my employer.
How did your liberal arts education at UW-Eau Claire help prepare you for your career?
My liberal arts education helped prepare me for the career I have by giving me insight into things other than business and numbers.
Is there something more you wish you would have done in college to prepare for your career?
I wish I would have been more proactive in seeking opportunities as a college student. I only had one internship in school and wish I would have gotten one every year. Internships give you great insight into what it is like on a day to day basis at a company, not just what they display at job fairs. Internships are learning experiences that will only help you in career and let you learn what you want to do once school is finished!
What advice do you have for UW-Eau Claire students to become successful in their own careers?
Remember that companies want you as well. Finding a job can be stressful, so it is easy to take the first thing that comes along, but make sure to strive for greatness and a company that fits your work style and personality. Companies seek students who are confident in their skills and realize that they can be an asset to the company!
