Goal setting is an important part of career planning. It is easy to SAY that in 5 years you will be working in your ideal job, making a very good income and living in Hawaii.
Achieving these goals isn't so easy. Setting goals and determining actions you will take to achieve them will make your goals much more attainable.
Each long-term goal you set needs short-term goals, or actions. Short term goals can be reached within a year; long term goals can take about 5 or more years to achieve.
An example of one career-related goal and the actions someone might take to reach that goal:

Re-Evaluate Goals
Each semester review your plan and the goals you have set. Determine if the steps you are taking are moving you in the right direction. As you learn more about yourself, you may discover you want to change your direction. Revisit the self-assessment and career research and set additional or different goals.
