Dear Mr./Ms. Last name,
First Paragraph: State the reason for writing the letter. Specify the position for which you are applying. Indicate from which source (associate, world wide web, news media, career center, employment service, etc) you learned of the opening.
Second paragraph: The following is an example of an alternative response to an advertisement. This type of letter is helpful when you are aware of the specific needs. Instead of a prose style paragraph, this area would be divided into two columns. List specific employer needs as described in the position description. Include employer needs and your qualifications.
Examples:
Employer Needs My Qualifications
Task Oriented - Chaired a team which received an "A" in a Senior Thesis project.
- Began college in the evening program and continued through to a Bachelor's Degree.
- Dependable - Perfect attendance in part-time and summer employment.
- Closed a store and deposited money each night for 6 months.
- Elected Sorority President.
Concluding Paragraph: If you do not refer to your resume in the previous paragraph, refer to it here. Indicate your intention to follow up this communication with a phone call in 1-2 weeks to request a meeting or interview. Repeat a phone call (or add a different number where you can be reached during certain hours, if appropriate). You may want to ask if the organization will be recruiting in your area, or if additional information or references from you would be helpful. Finally, thank the reader for his/her time and consideration.
Respectfully,
