Why did you decide to come to UW-Eau Claire for college?
On paper, I was looking for a place that had a great business school and was small enough where I wouldn’t just be another number, but big enough that I wouldn’t feel like I was in a fish bowl. Those were the very bare basics. After visiting Eau Claire among countless other schools, I was stunned by how well it fit me and all the opportunities it had to offer. The culture was both invigorating and diverse, and full of people who conducted themselves with purpose. I knew right away that it was going to be a place full of challenges and growth and that it was the right fit for me.
Why did you pick the major you selected?
I chose marketing initially because I was looking for a versatile business degree that would allow me to combine my analytical side with my creativity. As I progressed through the various business classes, I became fascinated with analytics. In a nutshell it’s anything from doing extensive research for corporations, understanding the best way to display products to drive profitable sales, to website design and so much more! It is the best fit for me and thus I added an analytics emphasis to my degree.
Embarrassingly, I have known I wanted to go into marketing since I was a junior in high school and my parents sent me to business camp where I led the marketing team of a mock corporation. While I know business camp isn’t for everyone, I definitely recommend getting out there, asking questions, and getting some hands on experience regardless of what major you’re considering.
Why did you decide to complete the Advanced Business Communication certificate?
The number one reason I decided on the BCOM certificate is because I used to be a terrible speaker! I learned a lot just from taking the basic required courses and decided to go for the certificate as a way to not only improve my public speaking skills, but to also stand out on my resume—little did I know they’d be some of the most valuable courses I’d ever take!
Completing the BCOM certificate has helped me in a HUGE way professionally. Last summer I did an internship with Target where I worked on a three month long project to drive profitable sales in electronics. Thanks to my BCOM classes, I was able to create an effective promotional brochure, write professional reports, and give an impactful final presentation that led me to accepting a position post graduation.
What does success mean to you? How has UW-Eau Claire College of Business prepared you for success?
From my point of view, success is setting goals in a variety of areas—career, social, financial, health—setting out to accomplish them, and then changing them! A very smart person told me once that, “Change is not merely necessary to life, it is life.” The UW-Eau Claire COB has prepared me for my vision of success by providing educators who have instilled me with the desire to continually stay in forward motion—score early, score often, get points on the board.
