Why did you decide to come to UW-Eau Claire for college?

UW-Eau Claire satisfies every requirement I have about college. It’s my dream place. It provides me with a good educational environment and convenient facilities, all of which makes my life very rich.  Professors at Eau Claire are very nice to international students so I have really benefited from studying here. Coming to Eau Claire has opened another door in my life as I am learning more about myself. Now, I am more certain of my decision to go to college and become an accountant.

Why did you pick the major you selected?

I have a real passion for accounting. I love numbers and logical theory. Accounting is a combination of broad finance, economic theory and specific logic-based math. It’s a good way for me to learn economics and how to run a company.

My parents influenced my decision to become an accountant as my father works at a company where accountants play a very important role. The faculty and staff at UW-Eau Claire have also influenced my decision to choose accounting as my major. I always think the people around you—their behavior, thinking, and academic quality—really influence you a lot. My accounting and finance professors have great academic backgrounds and nice personalities, too. While they have taught me a lot about accounting, they have also taught me how to approach problems and find creative ways to solve them. They have also shown me how to behave professionally and how to have the right academic attitude.

Have you completed an internship?

This spring, I am working as an integrated financial analyst in Eau Claire for the Jazz Festival Company. I am helping them set up an accounting system to track tickets sales and school registrations. I am learning a lot from this experience. It has given me the opportunity to apply what I have learned in class in the creation of a new and more effective process for this company. It has also given me the opportunity to develop my communication skills. I have also learned a lot about teamwork. Work is like building a bridge that connects you with others. Now I deeply understand how to work as part of a team by cooperating with others and trusting my coworkers. This experience is a good preparation for my future career.

Have you studied abroad?

Since my home university is Yunnan University of Finance and Economics in China, I am currently studying abroad at UW-Eau Claire. I came to UW-Eau Claire as part of the China 1-2-1 program so I will be here for two years.

I chose the China 1-2-1 program because it provided me with a great opportunity to enhance my academic skills and showcase my talent. It has also given me a chance to experience a very different and very fulfilling educational experience at UW-Eau Claire. While this experience will be beneficial to me and my career in the future, I think the most important benefit of this experience is that it has enriched my life. Above all, I am enjoying life here. It’s my dream place.

Is studying abroad expensive?

While some people might think studying abroad is very expensive, I think the cost is very reasonable.  In my opinion, it’s a great investment and what you gain from studying abroad greatly exceeds what you spend. It not only provides you with a chance to enhance your knowledge, but it also opens your horizons and enriches your life experience by allowing you to build international friendship and learn about different cultures. Studying abroad lets you know more about yourself, and at the same time, it helps you to find your own potential.

What advice do you have for those who are studying abroad?

My advice to students who are studying abroad is to be proactive and attend many different activities at your host university. You will benefit a lot from attending these activities. You will make new friends and learn about a different culture while you are developing your language skills.

What does success mean to you?

Success means self-actualization. Success to me is building my career doing something I am interested in, being surrounded by people I love, and contributing to society in a meaningful way. My interest is accounting and I would like to do something related to accounting in the future.

How has UW-Eau Claire College of Business prepared you for success?

UW-Eau Claire College of Business is preparing me for success by providing a wonderful environment to develop my academic knowledge and showcase my talent. My professors are great role models and through conversation with them, I deeply believe I have made the right decision about my major. The College of Business also offers me lots of opportunities to connect with the real world through internships. In addition, there is a good educational environment at UW-Eau Claire.  College of Business students are sensitive to current economic trends and world events. I have learned a lot from my classmates.
