For the second year in a row students from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Department of Accounting and Finance will compete at the International Collegiate Business Strategy Competition (ICBSC) hosted by the College of Business Administration at California State University, Long Beach. The competition has two phases: the remote phase which began February 4th and runs through April 20th, and the on-site phase which will be held in Anaheim, CA April 24–26.

Members of the UW-Eau Claire team are as follows:

  • Robert Bohnert, a second degree accounting major from Mauston, WI
  • Hannah Gaspar, a junior accounting and finance double major from Mankato, MN
  • Rachael Olsen, a senior accounting and finance double major from Combined Locks, WI
  • Jacob Raleigh, a senior business economics and finance double major from Cleveland, WI
  • Chelsey Simon, a senior finance major from Eau Claire, WI.

The team currently meets 2–3 times per week. Matthew Fish, associate lecture of accounting, and Dr. Pedro Sottile, assistant professor of finance, are coaching the UW-Eau Claire team.

“Dr. Sottile and I are consistently impressed by the character, work ethic, and drive displayed by our students,” said Fish. “The ICBSC provides a platform that really lets them display their skills, knowledge, and creativity.”

The ICBSC, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary, allows students to experience what it is like to run a manufacturing company in head-to-head competition. Teams are organized into four undergraduate “worlds” or “divisions” consisting of five universities. UW-Eau Claire is competing in World 2 which includes HEC Montreal (Canada), Loyola Marymount University (California), University of Maine, and Missouri Western University.

This is the second time UW-Eau Claire has come up against HEC Montreal and Loyola Marymount University. In 2013 the three universities competed in World 2 along with Ithaca College and the University of Northern Colorado. The UW-Eau Claire team was awarded 1st for overall performance with the HEC Montreal team coming in second. HEC Montreal also captured a 1st for the best written documents with Loyola Marymount coming in 2nd in this category.
