Plan to attend the Spring Career Conference

Spring Career Conference

The Spring Career Conference will be held Wednesday, February 5, 2014 from 10 am–3 pm in the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Davies Center Ojibwe Ballroom. Over 100 organizations will be on campus to meet UW-Eau Claire students. » View organizations attending the event.

Tips to help you stand out at Career Conference

The event, which was formerly called Internship Mania, gives students an opportunity to learn about internship and employment opportunities.

“We changed the name in response to feedback we received from employers and students who thought the event only provided an avenue for internship opportunities,” said Alyssa Slaby, a career and employment adviser in Career Services. “Many employers are also looking for candidates to fill full-time positions.”

Tiffany Weiss, an academic adviser and career development specialist in the College of Business Center for Advising, Development and Enrichment, encourages all business students to attend Career Conference.

“The event is a great opportunity for students to network and develop future contacts,” said Weiss. “Students can use the event to introduce themselves to prospective employers and learn more about their recruiting process.”

To get the most out of this event, Slaby and Weiss recommend that students update their resumes and prepare an elevator speech, a 30 second overview of their knowledge, skills, and accomplishments. See sidebar. They also suggest that students use the web to research the companies they are interested in prior to attending the career fair.

“In addition to basic information about the company, such as its history and product/service offerings, most company websites also include career information,” said Weiss. “Career sites typically include information about the organization’s culture, internships and career opportunities, recruiting process, and benefits.”

Slaby and Weiss also recommend that students consider attending the following activities leading up to the career fair:

  • Preparation workshops. The COB SPDP and the BCOM Department are offering workshops to help students prepare their resumes, develop their elevator pitches, and enhance their interview skills. » View schedule. Career Services is also offering similar workshops
  • Breakfast social. Students are invited to network with employers at a breakfast held prior to the career fair in the Davies Center Alumni Room from 8-10 am.
