Viljamaa named 2013 UW MBA Consortium Outstanding Student
Mikko K. Viljamaa has been named the 2013 University of Wisconsin MBA Consortium Outstanding Graduate by the graduate faculty of the University of Wisconsin MBA Consortium. Viljamaa, who will graduate this May, was selected from a pool of students that included graduates from August 2012, December 2012, January 2013, and May 2013.
He has a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering from the Turka Institute of Technology in Turko, Finland. Viljamaa is a product manager in the Appleton, WI service center for Metso, a global supplier of technology and services for the paper and pulp industry as well as other process industries. The company, which is headquartered in Helsinki, Finland, employs 30,000 professionals in over 50 countries. Viljamaa credits Metso’s support and willingness to invest in its employees for his ability to pursue his MBA dream.
Viljamaa started his MBA degree at UW-Oshkosh in their campus-based program; but professional traveling requirements led him to switch to the UW MBA Consortium program, a totally online program offered jointly by UW-Eau Claire, UW-La Crosse, UW-Oshkosh and UW-Parkside.
“The UW MBA Consortium program gave me a great and convenient opportunity to expand my business understanding in a stimulating and encouraging environment,” said Viliamaa. “With gifted and dedicated professors combined with students from different backgrounds, I had the opportunity to learn not only from the faculty members but also from my peers. Compared to some other programs, this approach offers an additional benefit which I know will be useful in my future professional voyage.”
Viljamaa will be recognized at the MBA Celebration Reception, Saturday May 18, 2013 in the UW-Eau Claire Davies Center Dakota Ballroom. The reception will begin immediately following the afternoon commencement ceremony.

Meet Mikko K. Viljamaa
In 2003, Mikko Viljamaa moved from Finland to "a new frozen tundra, Wisconsin,” with the intent of remaining in the states for two years and then returning to Europe.
“Little did I know then…after 10 years I’m still here and in the process of becoming a U.S. citizen,” he remarked.
Viljamaa has been described by Dr. Suresh Chalesani, UW-Parkside associate professor of management information systems, as “an intelligent and hardworking student who brought substantive analysis and multiple perspectives into discussion messages and papers.”
“Mikko’s performance in class was exceptionally excellent!” according to Dr. Lise Graham, UW-La Crosse professor of finance." He showed his intelligence and enthusiasm in his course work, always provided insightful points, participated in discussions actively, and worked extremely well with his classmates.”
Dr. Ben Arbaugh, UW-Oshkosh professor of Strategy and Project Management, agreed.
“Mikko was a consummate class participant, both in terms of providing high-quality content based on his experiences and facilitating discussions with fellow students. His global experiences enabled him to add value to our class discussions.”
