AMA attends Regional Conference at Whitewater; Bortner takes second in sales competition

Twenty-three University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire students attended the 6th Annual AMA Regional Collegiate Conference in Whitewater, WI, October 25, 2013. The conference was hosted by the AMA student chapter at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Attendees for this event included 280 students from seven different universities.
AMA members at the conference listened to speakers and networked with professionals from businesses such as Shopbop/Amazon, Red Frog Events, GMR Marketing, Verizon Wireless, Sherwin Williams, Target, Kohl's, Hormel, and Milwaukee Tool. Students also had an opportunity to compete for cash prizes in two competitions: the 2nd Annual Sales Competition sponsored by Federated Insurance, and the Marketing Strategy Competition sponsored by Kohl’s.
Fifty-eight students entered this year’s sales competition where they tested their skills selling commercial insurance package in two rounds of competition. Ten of the 58 students competing in the sales competition were UW-Eau Claire students. Six UW-Eau Claire students made it to the second round of the competition. Tim Bortner, a UW-Eau Claire professional sales marketing major from Corcoran, MN, took second place, earning a $100 cash prize.
Students participating in the Marketing Strategy Competition competed for $1,000 in cash prizes. Each four-member team was asked to conduct an audit of Kohl’s loyalty program and competitors, and used this information to recommend a revised program. A team of UW-Eau Claire students competed in this event, which was won by students from Ferris State University.
AMA hosts professional speakers and workshops every other Thursday at 6 pm in Hibbard Humanities Hall 102.
