UW-Eau Claire management students excel on national HR exam
University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire management majors achieved top scores on the new Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) Assurance of Learning exam. The online exam, which was offered for the first time in spring 2011 and again in summer 2011 and fall 2011, assesses whether seniors and recent graduates have the minimum knowledge needed to be successful HR practitioners.
"UW-Eau Claire students had a 78% pass rate which was far above the national average of 51%," said Dr. Scott Lester, professor of management.
Eighteen of the 23 UW-Eau Claire students who took the 2011 exam passed. While several general management majors sat for the test, the vast majority of UW-Eau Claire students taking the exam were human resource management majors who must pass it as a graduation requirement.
UW-Eau Claire alumnus Brittany Hohl, a May 2011 graduate majoring in HR management and Business Spanish, received the highest score in the country on the spring test. Senior Megan Robarge, a senior HR management student, ranked in the Top 10 nationally on the fall exam. Robarge expects to graduate from UW-Eau Claire in May 2012.
“We are very proud of all our students,” said Lester. “The fact they did so well reflects positively on them and our program.”
The SHRM Assurance of Learning exam consists of 160 multiple choice questions that address HR concepts such as employment law, organizational development, compensation and benefits, and workforce planning and talent management. Students who pass the four-hour exam receive a Certificate of Learning.
“Passing the exam is an achievement students can proudly list on their resumes,” said Lester. “It’s a mark of excellence that differentiates them from others in the job market,” he continued.
Student can take the SHRM exam anytime during their eligibility period which begins one year before graduation and ends one year after it. Individuals who do not pass may retake the test at another time within their eligibility period.
The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) is the world’s largest association devoted to human resource management. Representing more than 250,000 members in over 140 countries, SHMR serves the needs of HR professionals and advances the interests of the HR profession.
The UW-Eau Claire HR management Program has been endorsed by SHRM for aligning with its recommended curriculum. As of May 2011, only 242 programs at 195 educational institutions across the world have met SHRM’s educational standards.
