Becker returns to classroom full-time; Aroskar to become chair

D'Arcy BeckerDr. D’Arcy Becker, professor of accounting and chair of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Department of Accounting and Finance since 2007, has resigned her position as chair. She will step down from her administrative position at the end of the fall 2012 semester to return to the classroom on a full-time basis.

“I want to thank D’Arcy for her years of service as chair and for the fine leadership she has provided to the department and the profession,” said College of Business Dean Diane Hoadley.

Under Becker’s leadership, the number of accounting majors grew from 374 to 426 and the number of finance majors grew from 235 to 272 in 2012; this is roughly 12% growth in each major. Further, internships grew from about 30 per year to 50 per year. She also sought and received Blugold Commitment funding for three new tenure-track positions. Eleven of the 23 faculty members in the department were hired while Becker was chair.

A new minor in Audit and Control was added to the department’s academic offerings along with new courses Fraud Investigation, Advanced Accounting Systems, Accounting Ethics, Advanced Cost Accounting and Budgetary Control, Accounting Theory and Research, Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA), Introduction to Derivative Securities, Advanced Derivative Securities, Corporate Valuation and Financial Literacy Improvement Program (FLIP). In addition, the finance curriculum was restructured to better prepare students for the Chartered Financial Analyst examination.

Becker championed service learning in the department by formalizing the relationship between the department and Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (which is now the required two-credit VITA course) and the relationship between the department and FLIP. More recently, she provided leadership for the new Baker Tilly classroom, she began the process for separate AACSB International accreditation for the department and reinvented the Department Honors in Accounting and Department Honors in Finance programs. For the first time ever, the department will have approximately 10 students graduating with department honors this year.

Becker also created the curriculum and graduation standards for the China dual-degree programs in the college of business, overseeing accounting and finance major growth from six students the first year to more than 3 dozen this year. Working with department colleagues, Becker implemented a Peer Mentoring Program to facilitate cultural and academic exchanges between American and Chinese students.

Becker received a BBA, MBA and PhD all from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in auditing, fraud investigation and financial accounting, and does research and publishes papers on topics related to student teaching and learning, International Financial Reporting Standards, and auditing. Becker is the past president of the North American Accounting Society and a member of the editorial board of the journal, Issues in Accounting Education. She is a certified public accountant.
