Zimmer Named 2011 Outstanding Graduating Senior
Ashley Zimmer, a senior accounting major from Eau Claire, WI, was named the College of Business 2011 Outstanding Senior. She will also graduate with a minor in management and a certificate in advanced business communication.
“I selected accounting as a major because I have always enjoyed working with numbers and being organized,” said Zimmer. “Through my management minor and BCOM certificate I have learned how to be a more effective communicator in the accounting profession,” she continued.
Success to Zimmer means working hard and staying true to what she wants to achieve. Except for two scholarships she received from the Departments of Accounting and Finance and Business Communication, Zimmer has financed her entire education by working several jobs all at the same time. Currently she provides accounting and office administrative services to Heartland Aviation, a company she has worked for since 2006; she has been a teaching assistant since 2009 to Terry Wells, a senior lecturer in the Department of Management and Marketing, and Zimmer was recently hired as a payroll and accounting clerk for Precision Pipeline, LLC.
Zimmer has also completed two internships—a 1½ year accounting internship with Midwest Manufacturing in Eau Claire, WI, and a 3-month tax internship with RSM McGladrey, Inc, a public accounting firm in Minneapolis, MN. She is a member of both the Student Accounting Society and Beta Alpha Psi accounting and finance honorary society, and she has served as a mentor for University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, Phase II Freshman Orientation.
Zimmer’s immediate plans include securing a position with a public accounting firm in the Chippewa Valley, sitting for all four parts of the CPA examination, and planning and preparing for her September wedding. She hopes to use her experience in public accounting to one day secure a management position in the private sector.
“You only need to spend 10 minutes with Ashley to know why she won the award as our COB Outstanding Senior,” said Wells. “Ashley is extremely dedicated to any task that she undertakes, whether it is her accounting studies, working for me, or studying for her CPA,” she continued. “She has the energy, organization skills and intelligence to be successful in any future endeavors.”
