Commencement set for December 17; Management major to Speak, COB alum to be recognized

Commencement exercises for University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire College of Business students will be held Saturday, December 17, 2011 in Zorn Arena.

Chancellor Brian Levin-Stankevich will preside over the ceremonies and confer degrees. Provost and Vice Chancellor Patricia A. Kleine will present the candidates.

A total of 32 students are master's degree candidates. Of those, 20 are from the College of Business. Candidates for a master of business administration will receive degrees during the 9 a.m. ceremony. Dr. Michael Wick, dean of Graduate Studies and associate vice chancellor for Academic Affairs, and Dr. Martin Wood, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, will present diplomas and hood the master's degree candidates.

Cara Shimon, Hudson, WI, a candidate for a bachelor of business administration degree in operations and materials management, will give the "Reflections" during the morning ceremony.

A total of 718 students are candidates for bachelor's degrees, including 149 from the College of Business. Candidates for the bachelor of business administration degree will receive degrees during the 2 p.m. ceremony. College of Business Dean Diane Hoadley will present their diplomas.

Seven UW-Eau Claire alumni will receive awards from the UW-Eau Claire Alumni Association as part of the commencement activities. One alumni award recipient is an alumnus of the College of Business. Scott Bertzyk, 1981 graduate, will receive the Alumni Distinguished Achievement Award. The honor recognizes distinguished service to the community, state or nation that brings credit upon the recipient and the university.

A reception for graduates and guests will follow each ceremony in the Spruce-Tamarack Room of Davies Center.

Tickets, required for admission to both ceremonies, are available only to graduating students. There will be remote-site broadcasts of the ceremonies in Davies Theatre and in Room 100 of Hibbard Hall. No tickets are required for the remote-site broadcasts. Meet Scott Bertzyk, ‘81

Scott Bertzyk is an attorney and shareholder with Greenberg Traurig, an international law firm with approximately 1,800 attorneys and governmental professionals in 32 locations in the United States, Europe and Asia. He works in the Los Angeles office of the firm.

Bertzyk's practice focuses on commercial civil litigation. Over the course of his career, he has served clients as diverse as Bridgestone/Firestone, Goodrich Corporation, Village Properties, Baldwin Builders, the State of California and the County of Los Angeles. 

He graduated Order of the Coif from the University of Texas Law School and summa cum laude from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, with a joint degree in accounting and business administration. While in law school, he also passed the Certified Public Accountants’ examination.
